This past week in mobile identity news was one filled with awards nominations, grants for liveness detection, promises of collaboration and an intriguing rumor regarding the next Google Nexus smartphone.
Now that we have entered May it’s time to start preparing from CARTES America 2014: the first North American iteration of the 19 year old strong authentication event originally and annually held in Paris, France. As things start to gear up for the secure conexions event in Las Vegas starting May 13, Compexium (the organization behind CARTES) announced the nominees for the American SESAMES Awards.
Speaking of recognition, NexID announced this week that it was awarded $325,000 in grant funding to pursue liveness detection in biometrics. The company already prides itself as the first company to provide liveness detection software for fingerprint sensor smartphones will be using the new funding to pursue spoof protection in different biometric modes including face and iris recognition.
Spoof-proofing is a critical area of research fight now in the history of biometrics, now that the consumer-facing aspect of the technology is gaining so much traction. Biometric software can turn any mobile device into an authentication machine, and a new rumor has it that the upcoming Google Nexus 6 will be joining the ranks of smartphones with embedded fingerprint sensors.
This is particularly interesting news considering that Google is a member of the FIDO Alliance, the consortium that has thrown its support behind the Samsung Galaxy S5 biometric capabilities. Members include PayPal, Nok Nok Labs and Samsung, all of whom collaborate to bring biometric online payments to the newest Galaxy smartphone.
At the beginning of the week Mobile ID World reported on the Alliance’s newest member: Zwipe AS, makers of a biometric physical access card that brings the convenience of mobility to the realm of physical security. In addition to the company’s status as a new FIDO member, Zwipe mentioned in its press release that the newest version of its access card technology, the Evolution, will be released this summer.
Finally, ImageWare Systems, the company behind the Identity as a Service (IDaaS) model of enterprise solutions announced a partnership with IBM. Through this new partnership, ImageWare will be introducing its biometric user authentication and cloud-based identity management platform to IBM’s BlueMix. This gives IBM customers and developers the option to choose the biometric factors that best suit their needs.
Meanwhile at our sister site findBIOMETRICS, an interview with BIO-key and IDEX explores the state of the mobile biometric landscape. CEOs from both companies had a chance to speak with Peter O’Neill, president of Mobile ID World and findBIOMETRICS on their recent partnership together.
