Apple Pay Suffers Visa Enrollment Glitch

February 11, 2016

Apple Pay Suffers Visa Enrollment GlitchApple experienced an unusual and unexpected issue with its mPayment platform yesterday, with some users unable to register their Visa cards on Apple Pay.

It started at about 4:15 a.m. eastern time, and lasted for about seven hours, with full functionality now restored. Apple has not disclosed what caused the problem or how it was fixed; what is clear is that no other payment cards were affected, nor were Apple Pay users who had already registered their Visa cards on the platform. As such, only the small subset of users actively trying to add their Visa cards during those seven hours were affected.

It’s a disconcerting disruption, but issues like these are not unheard of in the world of digital payments. PayPal suffered two service disruptions last fall, with one of them occurring during an important period of holiday shopping; but neither of these events seems to have left a lasting impact on the service’s popularity.

For its part, Apple Pay might be the biggest mPayment platform in the world, and this appears to have been the first such issue the platform has run up against. Still, it’s likely to be something that Apple will investigate thoroughly internally as the company prepares to launch if mPayment platform in major new markets including China this year.
