Newly leaked images are fueling speculation that Apple may be on course to bring its Touch ID fingerprint scanning system into the display of the next iPhone.
The images come by way of persistent Apple leaker Benjamin Geskin, who claims they depict computer-assisted designs of the iPhone 8. The designs depict a full-size screen on the front of the device, while the back features a dual-lens camera in a top corner, a small rectangle near the mid-bottom of the device, and a circle in the mid-top. The circle is thought to indicate where the Apple logo will be; and while the purpose of the rectangle is unknown, it appears too small to be a fingerprint sensor, and of course does not have the usual circular shape of a Touch ID scanner.
The images suggest that despite reports of technical difficulties, Apple is proceeding with its plan to integrate Touch ID into the display itself – unless the company is prepared to ditch fingerprint scanning altogether in favor of 3D facial recognition, which is also anticipated for the device. It may also be worth noting that Apple has patented technology that would turn the Apple logo itself into a fingerprint sensor – a possibility that further confuses the forecast.
At the very least, it seems increasingly clear that the new iPhone will have a full-size display, wherever Touch ID may be hiding.
