NTT DOCOMO Extends FIDO Certified Mobile Lineup

September 30, 2015

NTT DOCOMO Extends FIDO Certified Mobile Lineup Mobile service provider NTT DOCOMO has announced plans to bring FIDO Alliance standards to new devices and to carrier billing service partners. The company became the first mobile network operator to join the FIDO Alliance board back in March of this year.

NTT DOCOMO already has six FIDO Certified smartphones that use biometric authentication as part of their security apparatus. The modality in play for most of those devices is fingerprint scanning, but the company also introduced the world’s first iris scanning smartphone (the Arrows NX F-04G) this summer. Together with the company’s extension of FIDO authentication to its third-party carrier billing payment partners, the NTT DOCOMO is helping to dramatically extend the reach of FIDO standards in Japan.

In a statement, NTT DOCOMO SVP Seiji Maruyama asserted that by helping to replace passwords with FIDO authentication standards, “we are able to deliver a superior end-user experience that includes enhanced security features,” adding “we are very excited to extend FIDO standards in new FIDO Certified devices as well as enabling more of our services.”

The company will be presented as a case study in two upcoming FIDO Alliance seminars, one in Washington, D.C. on October 5th, and the other in Tokyo on November 20th.
