EMVCo has updated its specifications for EMV 3-D Secure, the security platform underpinning various payment security systems including Verified by Visa.
For many, EMV 3-D Secure – Protocol and Core Functions Specification (or ‘3DS’) v2.1.0’s biggest update will likely be its support for merchant-initiated account verification, but other upgrades include improved transaction flows for out-of-band authentication and “further clarification on submitting a recurring or instalment payment request to the issuer,” according to a statement announcing the new version.
Commenting on the update, EMVCo Executive Committee Chair Jack Pan pointed to the rise of digital payments in explaining the need for 3DS standard. “With e-commerce use-cases expanding worldwide and new technologies emerging,” he said, “EMV 3DS provides a consistent, global solution to authenticate users and deliver industry leading security and performance, without compromising user experience.”
EMVCo plans to launch a compliance testing program sometime next year, and has already established guidelines for how to submit products for testing, as well as the process’s fee structure. And the organization maintains an open invitation to organizations interested in participating in the development of this standard to join its EMVCo Associates Programme, or to get advanced notice of future initiatives by becoming an EMVCo Subscriber.
