FIDO Standards, Biometrics Come to Rugged Smartphones

August 10, 2016

A new rugged smartphone is demonstrating the increasing awareness around mobile security.

FIDO Standards, Biometrics Come to Rugged SmartphonesCalled the Kyocera DuraForce PRO, the device sports a number of impressive features. In addition to a 1080p camera, 4G LTE connectivity, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon octa-core processor, it is highly durable: The device has IP68 and Military Standard 810G certification, ensuring that it is highly water-, dust-, shock-, and drop-resistant.

But it’s also notable for its FIDO Certification and built-in fingerprint sensor. In a statement announcing the device, its maker, Kyocera, emphasized these aspects’ support for mPayment services.

The emphasis on these security features on a rugged device indicates the growing importance of mobile biometrics as a standard security feature, and the rising influence of the FIDO Alliance authentication standards consortium. It also appears to serve increasing consumer demand for mPayment services, even in extreme environments.
