Ford Uses Biometric Tech to Improve Driver Experience

March 23, 2015

Smart City, connected carsFord Motor Company has announced that it is using advanced technology to design its vehicle interiors, including eye-tracking and other biometric technologies. Such an approach was taken with the recently revamped Ford GT interior, and will be taken beyond the automotive world in Ford-designed musical instruments, games, and even a racing sailboat, which will be displayed at the upcoming Salone del Mobile even in Milan.

According to the company, the guiding principles underlying the Ford GT’s interior redesign include Clarity of Intent, Innovation, and Connection. Those principles led to a design that concentrated in-car technologies into clearly organized islands in an ergonomic setup; a lean and lightweight instrument panel; and a tactility logic organizing technological areas as hard surfaces and touchable areas as soft.

Speaking in a press release, VP of Global Product Development Raj Nair explained that Ford has not only “introduced a great deal of useful new technology into our cars and trucks, we consistently are adding better materials, improved design and increased features across the board, from high-end vehicles to entry-level segments.” That, he said, “leads to a focus on design languages that not only convey the right messages, but deliver on an enhanced user experience.”

The company’s technological approach to examining and accommodating the user experience seems likely to become more and more prevalent in the auto industry as smart car technology continues to proliferate. With connected platforms like the Dragon Drive system already using voice biometric technology to recalibrate the driving experience, and tech leaders like Apple poised to dive into the connected car game, the future is looking bright for drivers.
