“In offering iris-based login, Kookmin Bank will join other domestic banks including KEB Hana Bank and Woori Bank.”
Another South Korean bank has signed on for iris-based authentication for customers via Samsung’s Galaxy Note7 smartphone. According to a new report from Yonhap News Agency, the support is coming soon, with an unnamed bank official telling the news agency that “[l]ast-minute preparations have been underway to link our mobile banking services to the iris-recognition capability” of the new device.
In offering iris-based login, Kookmin Bank will join other domestic banks including KEB Hana Bank and Woori Bank. But its support is particularly noteworthy for coming in the wake of Samsung’s recent Note7 recall, which has seen the company endeavoring to replace millions of already-sold devices over reports that some had exploded when being charged. When it’s officially announced, the bank’s support could help Samsung to find some more solid market footing, with new, less flammable Note7 devices now available for purchase.
The support should also help to further promote the use of mobile biometrics for user authentication, an increasingly popular technological mechanism among financial services organizations. While support for fingerprint authentication is now widespread, iris-based authentication represents a new frontier in this area.
