Leaked Pic of Next Nexus Shows Glass Rear, Fingerprint Sensor

August 15, 2016

A leaked image suggests that at least one of Google’s upcoming Nexus smartphones will feature a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Leaked Pic of Next Nexus Shows Glass Rear, Fingerprint SensorAs 9to5Google reports, the image was posted on a Twitter account under the username “nexus”, with accompanying text purporting to show the “2016 HTC Nexus”. The account described the smartphone as “a cross between the Nexus 4 & iPhone”, with a glass rear featuring an embedded fingerprint sensor.

Last year’s Nexus devices, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, each featured an FPC1025 fingerprint sensor from Fingerprint Cards, a leading supplier of the biometric technology to smartphone OEMs. Now, with a market research firm recently predicting that all smartphones shipped in 2018 will feature fingerprint sensors, it’s little surprise that Google is sticking with biometric access technology.

It isn’t clear which of the two forthcoming Nexus models—the “Sailfish” or the “Marlin”—is depicted in the image posted to Twitter, but they are expected to feature very similar designs. Each are thought to sport a 12MP rear camera, a USB-C port, and improved user interface features, though the models will vary in their screen sizes and memory.
