New HTC Device’s Details Leaked Ahead of MWC

February 23, 2015

Details have been inadvertently leaked on the HTC One M9 smartphone ahead of its debut at Mobile World Congress 2015, according to a Telegraph article by Rhiannon Williams. The details were posted on the website of a German retailer, and promptly removed.

In its appearance the new smartphone looks like a more gently-curved iPhone. It’s going to have a five-inch display, a 20MP rear-facing camera, and will use a 2GHz Snapdragon 810 processor. It’s also going to ship with the Android Lollipop 5.0, whose Face Unlock feature could make good use of that 20MP selfie camera.

Williams also cites reports that the Taiwan-based company is planning to unveil its first smart watch, currently code-named the HTC Petra. It’s said to have circular display, much like the forthcoming Apple Watch, and its own custom software may allow it to be used with iOS devices.

That could prove annoying for Apple, whose iWatch looks set to popularize smart watches, albeit at a high price for consumers. In the realm of smartphones, the major players have been battling against smaller companies offering lower-end, cheaper devices and stealing away marketshare. It’s possible that HTC will prove just such an opponent in the nascent smart watch market, but given that the HTC One M9 will have a retail price around $850 USD, HTC might actually be looking to dig into the high-end market with its newest wares.
