OmniVision Technologies Launches New Sensor

February 11, 2016

OmniVision Announces Single-Camera Sensor for Mobile Facial RecognitionOmniVision Technologies has launched a new imaging sensor with potential power capabilities in facial biometrics, the company has announced. It’s aiming its new OV2744, 1.4-micron PureCel sensor at the mobile device and notebooks markets.

Explaining the new sensor’s strengths in a statement, OmniVision Product Marketing Manager Arun Jayaseelan said that it offers “both premium RGB imaging and high quality IR information”, the latter being applicable to biometric applications. According to the company, the sensor can capture 1080p video at 60 FPS, “while consuming less power than any other 1080p sensor currently on the market.” Most notably, it’s a single-camera solution, offering OEMs reduced costs and more design options than the two-camera systems more frequently used in mobile devices and notebooks, Jayaseelan said.

It’s the latest offering in OmniVision’s PureCel product line, with last autumn’s OV2281 sensor having been positioned as a mobile iris scanning solution. By shifting focus to facial imaging with the new OV2744, OmniVision may be tapping into a potentially lucrative market, given the rising prominence of facial recognition technologies on mobile devices—though of course there is plenty of room for growth in iris scanning too.

OmniVision says the OV2744 is currently available for sampling, with higher-volume production planned for later this quarter.
