Oberthur Technologies has announced a new solution designed to bring eSIM connectivity to Windows 10 notebooks and laptops. Dubbed DakOTa 4.0, it’s fully compliant with GSMA Consumer Phase 2 eSIM standards.
The solution will allow the embedded SIM card of a given Windows 10 device to be reprogrammed remotely, enabling cellular connectivity almost anywhere without the need for physical SIM provisioning. In a statement announcing the new solution, OT Connected Device Makers Business Deputy Managing Director Viken Gazarian explained that the solution is a product of OT and Microsoft’s bet that “eSIM technology can boost the adoption of cellular connectivity in the personal computer space”, which will open new opportunities to MNOs and their customers.
The development follows soon after news that Microsoft was working with Gemalto to enable the latter’s eSIM provisioning platform for Windows 10, with the companies anticipating that the first devices to benefit should hit the market during this year’s holiday season. Together with DakOTa 4.0, it all points to a coming wave of eSIM-enabled devices, with Windows 10 being the operating system connecting them all together.
