Samsung Expanding Knox Security Beyond Mobile

April 28, 2016

Samsung is expanding its Knox security platform beyond the mobile domain, the company has announced. In a statement, Samsung outlined Knox’s growing enterprise applications, and hinted at a potentially important place in the emerging Internet of Things.

Samsung Expanding Knox Security Beyond MobileSamsung Knox is perhaps best known as the mobile security platform used in Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge devices, as well as its mPayment platform, Samsung Pay. It was recently lauded by Gartner, outperforming other major mobile security platforms in a new study for its authentication, encryption, and other security capabilities. Samsung Knox performed particularly well in the area of Corporate Managed Security.

As such, it seems a natural extension for Samsung to purposefully bring its platform to the enterprise. In its statement, Samsung emphasized Samsung Knox’s “multi-platform interoperability”, which allows it “to work with existing IT assets;” and the company announced that its compatibility would extend beyond Android operating systems to work with Samsung’s own Tizen OS. The company also pointed out that more than 120 enterprise mobility management providers around the world support Samsung Know, and asserted that “Samsung Knox also works seamlessly between Internet of Things solutions with a collection of open APIs and SDKs.”

This last point could prove particularly important going forward. As more devices become enmeshed in the emerging IoT, many businesses will want to leverage them while maintaining a high level of security; as such, the commercialization of Knox for the IoT could be a major business opportunity. And given that Samsung is already involving itself in the IoT ecosystem with its ARTIK chip line, it seems that it has a vested and growing interest in this market.
