Both LG and Samsung are planning to integrate iris scanning technology into flagship mobile devices planned for release next year, according to new reports.
No further details are yet available, but if true these developments point to what could be a larger trend in the smartphone industry. This past summer, Fujitsu worked with Japanese telecom NTT DoCoMo to launch the world’s first iris-scanning smartphone; and then this fall, Microsoft followed suit with its new Lumia 950 and 950 XL smartphones. That was part of a bigger push into biometric security on Microsoft’s part, given its broader efforts with the Windows Hello security apparatus of its latest operating system, Windows 10.
If LG and Samsung are indeed now heading in this direction themselves, it could signal a broader shift as biometric authentication becomes more important, particularly with the rise of mPayment platforms like Samsung Pay. While Apple’s Touch ID system helped to popularize smartphone fingerprint sensors, which are now more or less standard features of high-end smartphones, that system has nevertheless proven to be susceptible to spoofing. Iris recognition is thought to be more accurate and secure, and as this perception catches on with other OEMs, we may soon see more iris scanning smartphones in the pipeline.
