Starbucks, KFC, Chili’s to Support Apple Pay

October 9, 2015

Starbucks, KFC, Chili's to Support Apple PayApple Pay is making its way into some popular fast food restaurants. Speaking at the Re/code conference in California this week, Apple VP Jennifer Bailey announced that Starbucks, KFC, and Chili’s would soon start accepting payments via the company’s mPayment service.

Starbucks is going to be the first to give it a go, with Apple Pay support coming this year, while KFC and Chili’s will start accepting Apple Pay next year. It could be a significant win for the company as it strives to control market share against emerging rivals like Android Pay and Samsung Pay, both of which having recently entered the US market. Meanwhile, PayPal is starting to make its way into the mPayment market too, with plans to integrate its OneTouch checkout system into the Subway sandwich shops mobile app.

It isn’t clear if getting customers where they go for a quick bite is a specific strategy on the part of Apple and PayPal, or if it just happens to be occurring as part of a broader push into the overall mPayments market, but partnering with these prominent chains is an obvious win for Apple Pay. Still, competitor Samsung Pay is technologically compatible with both NFC- and swipe-based card readers and is therefore more widely accepted across the map, so this latest victory on Apple’s part mostly counts against Android Pay and PayPal.
