Visa’s online payment service is coming to India and a number of European countries, the company has announced. Later this year, consumers in France, India, Ireland, Poland, Spain, and the UK will be able to use Visa Checkout for online purchases.
Announcing the expansion in a press release, Visa pointed to signs of growth in e-commerce, noting that an eMarketer study found global growth of 22.7 percent between 2014 and 2015. As such, this is “the perfect time to bring Visa Checkout to the hundreds of millions of connected consumers using mobile devices across Europe and India today,” said Visa Digital Solutions SVP Sam Shrauger.
The service is already in place in 16 countries, with over 250,000 merchants having adopted it.
Last autumn, Visa improved the service’s appeal by introducing tokenization to its Visa Checkout transactions, enhancing the system’s security for consumers and merchants alike. As the company continues to show growing interest in digital payments and sophisticated security technologies, it may help it to hold its own against upstarts like PayPal as they compete for financial services marketshare.
