Ericsson has teamed up with Denmark-based Grundfos to enable mobile payments for water ATMs.
The system was just deployed in Kenya’s Makueni county in collaboration with World Vision. It operates via automated machines that dispense water, which the Denmark company calls ‘water ATMs’. Now, Ericsson’s M-Commerce Interconnect mobile wallet platform has been used to enable mPayments via the Grundfos AQtap mobile app, allowing users to buy water with their smartphones.
In a statement announcing the move, Grundfos Lifelink Managing Director Peter Todbjerg Hansen explained that the solution offers better efficiency for water retailers. “With the AQtap water ATM and its revenue collection platform powered by mobile payment, our innovation can play a part in removing some of the key pain points around how water is paid for and revenue streams secured.”
Ericsson has also provided mobile wallet technology elsewhere on the continent, with telecom MTN Swaziland deploying its Ericsson Converged Wallet last summer.
