FPC Biometric Under-Glass Sensor Featured on Hauwei Device

“…the fingerprint sensor used in the device comes solely from FPC, saying it represents the company’s ‘complete and holistic offering, including not only hardware, but also state-of-the-art algorithms and secure software implementations.'”

Fingerprint Cards is celebrating the first commercial launch of its under-glass fingerprint sensor technology. It hits the market via Huawei’s new Mate 9 Porsche Design smartphone.FPC Biometric Hardware and Software Featured Under-Glass on Hauwei Device

The sensor model in question, FPC1268, was first announced earlier this year. It’s the company’s first sensor designed to read fingerprints through cover glass, allowing it to be embedded under the face of a given smartphone.

That’s just what Huawei has done, with the Mate 9 Porsche Design featuring a curved glass face that extends all along its front. While it still requires dedicated non-display space at the bottom of the face for the home button and fingerprint sensor, it can be seen as a step toward the in-display fingerprint scanning to which many mobile OEMs aspire.

In a statement announcing the integration, FPC R&D SVP Pontus Jägemalm called it “an important milestone” for his company. He also suggested the fingerprint sensor used in the device comes solely from FPC, saying it represents the company’s “complete and holistic offering, including not only hardware, but also state-of-the-art algorithms and secure software implementations.”
