‘Leaked’ Galaxy Note 8 Images Hint At In-Display Fingerprint Sensor

Samsung may be working to implement in-display fingerprint scanning in its next major mobile device, suggest new images purported to depict the Galaxy Note 8.

'Leaked' Galaxy Note 8 Images Hint At In-Display Fingerprint SensorThe images were posted by tech gadget leaker Poyoco Tech, and show a smartphone with a full-size display on the front, like the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S8. But unlike that device, the Note 8 doesn’t seem to have a fingerprint sensor on the back, or anywhere else, for that matter.

That could mean that Samsung means for the fingerprint sensor to go into the display itself, perhaps seeking to stay competitive with Apple, which is thought to be trying to integrate its Touch ID system into the display of the next iPhone; the Note 8 also appears to have dual-lens camera, another anticipated feature of the iPhone 8.

This is all just speculation, of course. TechRadar calls Poyoco Tech “an unproven source,” and the providence of its Note 8 images is unknown. Still, as smartphone makers seek to support fingerprint scanning while also expanding screen space as much as possible, the pursuit of in-display scanning is presumably a key concern among the industry’s top smartphone makers.
