Gemalto‘s embedded Secure Element will be used in the Samsung Galaxy S8 in certain markets, the company has announced.
In a statement, Gemalto noted that this is not the first time its eSE technology has been used by Samsung, with previous integrations into the Galaxy A series and the Galaxy C series of devices in the China market. In the Samsung Galaxy S8, Gemalto’s eSE will support Samsung Pay, the first mobile payments platform in the world to confirm transactions through iris scanning.
The integration will also help to link the Galaxy S8 to other service providers through Gemalto’s Trusted Services Hub, which facilitates device provision and management with third parties like mobile network operators.
It’s a high-profile deployment for Gemalto and its eSE technology, with Samsung one of the two most prominent smartphone brands in the world. Commenting on the integration, Gemalto SVP Suzanne Tong-Li said it “proves that our strategy based on our state-of-the-art embedded secure elements is successful.”
