Meizu MX5 Makes Debut in India

Meizu’s MX5Mobile Biometrics smartphone has now launched in the Indian market. The regional debut follows its launch in China, Meizu’s home base, a couple of months ago, with the MX5 priced at Rs 19,999 in India.

It’s a thin, light device, weighing only 140 grams and with a thickness of 7.6mm. It also features a 5.5″ HD Super AMOLED display, a 20.7 MP front-facing camera (along with a 5 MP rear-facing camera), and a 2.2GHz MediaTek Helio X10 MT6795T octa-core 64-bit processor. Its standout feature, though, might be its mTouch 2.0 fingerprint sensor, which is embedded in the device’s home button.

The sensor comes by way of Fingerprint Cards (FPC) which has over the past several months become perhaps the leading fingerprint sensor supplier for smartphone makers in the Asia-Pacific region. Powered by Precise Biometrics software, the FPC1155 is the sensor re-branded by Meizu as the mTouch 2.0. Meizu is evidently pleased with the sophistication of the technology, asserting that it takes only 0.48 seconds to unlock the device using the fingerprint scanner.

This kind of biometric authentication is an increasingly common feature on mid- and high-end mobile devices, and as its popularity has increased since the MX5’s debut in China, it could help to make it an even more appealing device as it launches in the Indian market.
