NECAM To Show Off Biometric IoT Solutions

NEC Corporation of America is planning to show off two new Internet of Things solutions at next week’s Hannover Messe 2016 trade show, the company has announced. The solutions are for the areas of manufacturing and retail respectively, and both are designed to be compatible with Microsoft’s Azure IoT platform.

It uses a Factory Energy Management System to analyze energy consumption, and uses NEC’s facial recognition technology to enable employee identification, combining that capability with its operational analytics to facilitate effective case management.

Meanwhile, NEC’s retail solution uses facial biometrics to assess shoppers’ gender and age, combining that data with information about their shopping habits. First announced early last year, the system could help to pioneer a new frontier in retail and biometrics.

In any case, the technologies illustrate the potential for IoT technologies, and NEC believes they could have many other applications as well. Commenting in a statement, NEC VP Hiroyumi Inoue proclaimed, “While we are focused on manufacturing and retail solutions today, our offerings are applicable across many industries including public safety, transportation, and hospitality.”
