Password Manager NordPass Extends Support for Biometric Authentication

December 10, 2021

NordPass is now enabling end users to access their accounts via biometric authentication on Windows and macOS.

Password Manager NordPass Extends Support for Biometric Authentication

The company offers an eponymous password manager platform, which stores end users’ various passwords in an encrypted vault and automatically fills them in when a given site or app is visited. Like other password manager platforms, NordPass secures a given user’s many passwords behind one single master password used for account access. Now, Windows and macOS users can instead access their vault and the passwords therein with a fingerprint or face scan.

“Biometric authentication is great. We’re huge fans here at NordPass,” the company said in a blog post announcing the biometric support. “It has made life for our mobile users a whole lot easier, less annoying, and quicker without compromising security.”

That having been said, the company asserted that the “best way to ensure maximum security for your accounts is to use it along with Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)”.

Password manager apps are increasingly integrating support for biometric authentication and other post-password security measures. LastPass, for example, has supported biometrics for some years now, and added extra multi-factor authentication options for users last year.

For its part, NordPass already supported biometric authentication on iOS and Android prior to this latest update, and has highlighted the vulnerabilities of over-reliance on passwords in its reports on the most popular passwords among end users.

In a statement announcing the expanded biometric support, NordPass also noted the growing popularity of biometrics, pointing to findings from Experian’s 2021 Global Identity and Fraud Report indicating that 74 percent of users prefer biometrics as their main form of authentication security.
