Brief Service Disruption Unlikely to Drain PayPal's Energy“The root cause appears to have been a power outage at a data center used by the digital payment service.”

PayPal suffered a major service disruption last night. Service appears to have been disrupted around 10 pm on October 29th, with service returning well after midnight this morning.

According to International Business Times, the service disruption caused a flood of tweets from merchants and consumers complaining about the issue. The root cause appears to have been a power outage at a data center used by the digital payment service.

It’s a slight but embarrassing incident that came at an inopportune time, with PayPal having reported lower-than-anticipated Q3 revenues due to a strong dollar’s effect on Europe- and China-based transactions.

Still, given that the company only became independent this past summer, and considering its enormous ambitions with respect to leading the digital transformation overtaking the world of payments, these can only be minor setbacks. The company continues to make headway on various fronts, even sneaking in some competition against the growing mPayment platforms now spreading around the world, and a minor power outage or dip in revenues can’t be expected to slow it down too much.
