Samsung Formally Announces Gear S2

Samsung Formally Announces Gear S2Samsung has revealed more details about the Gear S2 smartwatch. The information comes as part of the company’s official announcement of the device after teasing it at a press conference last month.

Perhaps taking a cue from Apple, Samsung is releasing multiple models of the device – well, two. The standard version has a somewhat futuristic look, with a pewter bezel and white wristband, and a minimalist watch face; while a ‘classic’ version sports a black bezel and dark leather wristband, with a more traditional-looking watch face. Like Apple, Samsung seems to be aiming to promote its smartwatch as both a new kind of high-tech device and a new kind of luxury watch.

Both models feature the same 1.2″ circular display with 360 x 360 resolution, which the user interacts with, at least in part, by rotating the bezel. Also notable is the fact that the device comes equipped with NFC capabilities, paving the way for compatibility with the Samsung Pay mPayment platform.

Beyond that, the device will offer the same general functionality to be found on the Apple Watch and, presumably, various other forthcoming smartwatches: notifications relating to texts, emails, etc., and apps helping users to track fitness and activity. It’s also going to have a battery life somewhere between two to three days, and it’s going to run on Samsung’s Tizen OS, not Android Wear. Samsung hasn’t yet disclosed the Gear S2’s price or release date.
