Western Union Enables Apple Pay for Money Transfers

Western Union has enabled Apple Pay for money transfers.

Western Union Enables Apple Pay for Money TransfersIt’s a reflection of the growing popularity of the mobile channel. In a statement announcing the new functionality, Western Union SVP Khalid Fellahi noted that 60 percent of all of the company’s money transfers are now performed through mobile devices; as such, in enabling Apple Pay to let users authorize such transactions with a simple fingerprint scan, “Western Union is delivering an exceptional experience across our mobile platform, allowing our customers to conveniently and reliably move money, whenever they please,” Fellahi said.

While the functionality will apply to transactions sending money around the world, those transactions will need to originate in the US for now. But later this year, Western Union says, the functionality will come to UK users, and presumably it will expand further from there.

The development reflects the growing popularity of Apple’s digital payment service, which is thought to be leading the mPayment market, according to a recent report from Juniper Research.
