Fingerprint Cards and Zwipe have entered into a strategic partnership, the companies have announced.
It’s all about smart cards. Zwipe has developed a system integrating fingerprint scanning into a smart card form factor, and moreover one that has the capability to harvest energy from card reader terminals as it swipes via NFC. Originally designed to address the payments market, the system also has access control applications, with Zwipe having recently announced a new offering for that market called Zwipe ID.
The technology thus has considerable appeal to a fingerprint sensor specialist like FPC, especially given its recent ambitions to expand beyond the mobile market. FPC has also just entered into a licensing deal with Precise Biometrics for embedded biometric software for smart cards, and is evidently looking to further its market reach with this Zwipe partnership.
It looks like a win-win for both companies. In a statement announcing the partnership, FPC CEO Jörgen Lantto called the it “inevitable” given the two companies’ positions in their respective markets, while Zwipe CEO Kim Kristian Humborstad explained that “FPC is experiencing strong momentum and it made sense for Zwipe to join forces with them to grow market receptiveness” in biometric smart cards.
