1Password has launched a new tool aimed at helping developers assess whether their users are prepared to transition from traditional passwords to passkeys.
Passkey Ready works by collecting anonymized data about a visitor’s device and browser when they access an app or website. This information helps determine if the visitor can use passkeys, providing developers with insights into their user base’s readiness for the technology.
Implementing Passkey Ready involves adding a simple code snippet to a website or app, and once a sufficient amount of data is collected, developers receive a detailed report via the Passage console. The dashboard offers multiple insights, including overall passkey readiness, readiness over time, platform-specific readiness, and geographic readiness.
Passkeys, developed by the FIDO Alliance in collaboration with companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, use asymmetric cryptography to ensure robust, phishing-proof authentication. The technology aims to offer a seamless and secure login experience through biometrics, improving user satisfaction by reducing the frustrations associated with traditional password management.
Last year, 1Password launched passkey support for iOS users, enabling those running iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 to use passwordless authentication to access their secure vaults. The feature, previously promised for the spring of 2023 and piloted that July, is now available on both desktop browsers and mobile devices.
