ATB Ventures has established an official partnership with the Government of Alberta, delivering the latest sign that its Oliu solution will play an important role in Canada’s digital ID landscape.
ATB Ventures is the innovation arm of ATB Financial, an Albertan bank. Oliu is its digital ID platform, ATB Ventures has not offered a detailed description of how it works, the company has indicated that it plans to make Oliu into a central hub for identity-related information and documents including passports, medical records, and even professional titles. The company says Oliu is based on blockchain technology and W3C standards.
Importantly, Oliu attained certification through the Digital ID and Authentication Council of Canada (DIACC) last month. DIACC’s mission is to set standards for digital ID and authentication systems with respect to security, privacy, and interoperability within the Canadian digital economy. To that end, in 2020 it launched the Pan-Canadian Trust Framework (PCTF), which is meant to comprise those standards and guidelines.
Now, the partnership with Alberta’s provincial government will enable Oliu to more easily verify users who have an Alberta.ca Account, a digital government services program first launched in 2015. Organizations using Oliu will be able to offer customers the option of confirming their identity by signing into their Alberta.ca Account, without the need to share their personal information.
“This project empowers Albertans to choose how they want to identify themselves when accessing online services,” commented Alberta’s Minister of Technology and Innovation, Nate Glubish. “It’s a great show of confidence that ATB is taking advantage of the secure Alberta.ca Account to deliver value to its customers.”
ATB Ventures has also previously partnered with Canada’s federal government, having announced in 2022 that it would help to develop a proof of concept for a “National Digital Trust Service”. That solution would also involve Oliu, as well as Proof, ATB Ventures’ digital wallet offering.
