It’s been another rich and varied week in Mobile ID World news and that is reflected in this week’s top stories roundup, though Apple and mobile ID are topics that have an outsized presence in the group.
The topics are intertwined, in fact, in one of the week’s most popular items. CNBC managed to obtain documents detailing Apple’s agreements with certain state partners in its ambitious mobile ID program. Among other things, the documents indicate that Apple has considerable power over how the mobile-based digital ID programs are going to roll out, including sole discretion over launch and rollout timelines and compatible devices:

The Apple brand got some additional time in the spotlight this week thanks to a third party app developer. Based in Vancouver, Train Fitness has launched an eponymous app for the Apple Watch that leverages the wearable device’s sophisticated sensors to track some fairly fine-grained movements during users’ exercise routines, such as reps during bench press exercises:

Returning to the mobile ID space, readers showed sustained interest in news out of Brazil that might turn out to be bigger than it first appears. Amigo Edu and idwall recently announced a partnership aimed at letting students confirm their identities via selfie on a mobile app before taking exams. But Mastercard is also involved, and the three companies have indicated that they are looking at a far wider scope of applications for this mobile ID solution beyond test-taker verification:

Identity verification was also central to a partnership between OmniShop and IPification announced this week. The former operates a platform designed to automate the app development process for online businesses, and has opted to offers its clients access to IPification’s once-click phone verification service to help confirm the identities of their end users and customers:

And finally, Mobile ID World readers showed strong interest in some of the up-and-coming startups that showed strong performances in the FIDO Alliance’s latest Developer Challenge. Concluding at this year’s Authenticate 2021 conference in Seattle, the Challenge illustrated some of the considerable innovation underway in the authentication industry:
