Apple Supplier Confirms Shipments of 3D Sensor Modules

June 14, 2017

“The news thus adds credibility to the widely shared expectation that Apple will implement 3D facial recognition in its new flagship device…”

Speaking at a press conference this week, Largan Precision CEO Adam Lin said that his company will ship 3D sensor modules in the second half of this year.Apple Supplier Confirms Shipments of 3D Sensor Modules

It’s big news for those reading between the lines. Largan is one of Apple’s suppliers, and while the company has not named the client for which it plans to ship the sensor modules, given that the company has also announced plans to double its workforce to meet demand in the same year in which Apple is expected to launch a new iPhone, it seems likely that the sensor modules are intended for the device.

According to new reports, the sensor modules will feature infrared technology allowing for 3D facial recognition, a feature rumored for the forthcoming ‘iPhone 8’; LG Innotek is thought to be supplying camera technology for this purpose, too. There is also some speculation that the Largan technology could be used for iris scanning, as well.

The news thus adds credibility to the widely shared expectation that Apple will implement 3D facial recognition in its new flagship device, and adds fuel to more speculative prognostications about iris scanning. Apple’s work on in-display fingerprint recognition, meanwhile, remains shrouded in mystery.
