Authorities in Nigeria are planning to employ biometrics in a nationwide census, and Bio-Metrica is providing the technology platform, the company has announced.
The country’s National Population Commission has commissioned Bio-Metrica’s Multi-Factor Biometric Census Registration System (CRS) for its efforts in the 2018 Population Census. As Bio-Metrica explains in a statement, the NPC has been tasked with “using biometrics to ensure all citizens are properly identified and to reduce fraud”; to that end, it’s going to provide handheld devices that can collect citizens’ fingerprint and facial biometrics, and its CRS is going to be used to manage that data. The CRS is being deployed in the country in collaboration with domestic partner Chronowerx Nigeria Limited.
The biometric registration project comes after a biometric identification system deployed by the country’s banks helped the Nigerian government to identify payroll fraud in the public service, suggesting that government authorities are increasingly interested in the advantages of biometric technology. Bio-Metrica, meanwhile, appears to be enjoying a rising profile, with the company having just launched a Biometric Identification System aimed at the enterprise market last week.
