A website blunder has apparently leaked Apple Pay’s forthcoming launch in Canada. A footer on a page of TD Canada Trust’s website, which was quickly removed, listed the mPayment platform as “COMING SOON”.
As AppleInsider points out, the bank’s American subsidiary, TD Bank, began offering Apple Pay support back in December of last year, so it’s not a huge surprise to see its Canadian parent onboard for its northern launch. And the fact of a Canadian launch shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, either, given that the NFC technology that merchants need in place to support Apple Pay transactions is already widespread in the country.
As for how big a deal Apple Pay in Canada is going to be, it’s hard to say. Apple won’t even release hard data on how Apple Pay is doing in the US, leaving analysts to speculate; looking at its prospects for Canada, a Cormark Securities analyst has suggested that its effect in the country would be “immaterial.”
Whatever the case may turn out to be, Apple Pay does indeed appear to be on its way to Canada. There had already been some speculation that it would launch in Canada in November, and TD Canada Trust’s online fumbling certainly seems to back up that idea.
