“National brands like Loblaws, Petro-Canada, and the beloved Tim Hortons are among the service’s official merchant partners…”
Canadian Android users can now pay for their Timmies with their phones. Android Pay has launched in Canada with the support of Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Interac, and a handful of banks including BMO, CIBC, and Scotiabank.
National brands like Loblaws, Petro-Canada, and the beloved Tim Hortons are among the service’s official merchant partners, but like other leading mPayment platforms, Android Pay should be compatible with any NFC-enabled POS terminals, which are widespread in Canada.
Android Pay launches in the country after its chief rivals, with Apple Pay having arrived about a year and a half ago, and Samsung Pay having made its debut more recently. But with respect to the latter, Android Pay has a strong advantage in terms of support from financial institutions, with Samsung Pay currently only available through certain cards issued by CIBC.
Android Pay’s Canadian launch comes soon after it reached Russia last week. Google recently listed both countries as being on its roster of forthcoming market launches, alongside Brazil, Spain, and Taiwan, which would seem to be next up.
