Evidence Mounting for Face-Scanning iPhone with In-Display Fingerprint Scanner

January 23, 2017

Evidence is mounting that Apple is going to integrate highly advanced biometric technologies into its new iPhone, anticipated for release this autumn.

Evidence Mounting for Face-Scanning iPhone with In-Display Fingerprint ScannerAs AppleInsider reports, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has asserted in a new memo that Apple is looking to make the switch from its current capacitive Touch ID fingerprint sensor to an optical sensor that can be embedded into the device’s display. The aim is to have a full-face OLED display on the next iPhone with the sensor embedded under glass.

The memo corresponds with a recent report from investment firm Cowen and Company, which also predicted an in-display fingerprint sensor for the next iPhone. The reports also align in forecasting that the next iPhone will feature facial recognition, with Kuo reporting that while Apple has also been considering iris scanning, it’s likely to favor face scanning based on its current IP holdings.

For his part, Kuo’s analyses have proven prescient in the past, with his latest prognostications lending further credibility to the case for Apple putting a strong focus on biometrics for its next flagship phone.
