“While the device’s focus is on music, it’s also a true smart home hub, with Google claiming that it’s compatible with over a thousand devices from more than 150 smart home brands including Nest and Philips Hue.”
Google is tuning its smart home hardware to the music market with Google Home Max. First announced in October, the device is now available for order through the Google Store, Verizon, Best Buy, and Walmart, and through pop-up Google retail stores in New York City and Los Angeles.
Google Home Max is a companion device to the Google Home Mini. Both devices leverage Google’s sophisticated voice-based AI software for user interaction, but whereas the Mini is a donut-sized product aimed at offering unobtrusive AI assistance throughout the home, the Google Home Max is focused on delivering high-quality audio. It features two 4.5″ woofers, and Google says it’s capable of being 20 times louder than the original Google Home.
Its AI technology has been adapted to help deliver superior sound, too; it’s designed to automatically adjust various sound settings depending on where it’s placed within a room. And of course it offers the usual AI interactivity, answering users’ queries and even doing things like looking up a song that a user can’t remember just by searching for a snippet of the lyrics.
While the device’s focus is on music, it’s also a true smart home hub, with Google claiming that it’s compatible with over a thousand devices from more than 150 smart home brands including Nest and Philips Hue. As such, it’s not just a smart speaker but one of the multiple smart home hub devices in an increasingly competitive market – and it’s on the market just in time for the holidays.
