Hyundai Announces AI Assistant for Cars, Based On SoundHound Tech

Hyundai Announces AI Assistant for Cars, Based On SoundHound Tech

In keeping with the current trends of heavy corporate investment in AI and growing convergence between the automotive and IT sectors, Hyundai has developed a custom AI assistant for in-vehicle applications, and is planning to include it in new cars to be released in 2019.

Called the Intelligent Personal Assistant, the system is designed to let users control in-car systems, and to request information such as directions, all through voice command. It can also be used to make calls, send texts, play music, and check the weather, and even remotely control smart home devices, among other functions; in other words, it’s something like a Siri or Alexa assistant for the car. And like those AI platforms, the IPA can be activated with a special phrase – “Hi, Hyundai.”

While Hyundai announced a partnership with Korea-based Kakao to work on AI and speech recognition technology this past summer, the newly-announced IPA platform is based on technology developed with SoundHound, a Silicon Valley-based firm that is perhaps best known for its music identification software for mobile devices.

Hyundai says it’s planning to include it in Kia, Genesis, and, of course, Hyundai car models. In the meantime, the company will demonstrate a simplified version of the system next February in Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles that it is planning to trial in South Korea. It will also showcase the technology at next month’s Consumer Electronics Show, which will run from January 9th to 12th in Las Vegas.
