The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus went on sale today around the world.
Since their announcement, the devices have lived somewhat in the shadow of the iPhone X, which offers a more substantial design change than the incremental upgrades of the iPhone 8 devices. Nevertheless, in a normal year the iPhone 8 would probably generate some considerable buzz, with advanced features like a super-fast A11 Bionic chip, wireless charging, a dual camera system enabling depth of field photography, and Retina HD displays.
One feature that hasn’t changed from the iPhone 7 is the iPhone 8’s Touch ID fingerprint scanning feature. And that’s important: The iPhone X, which will introduce Apple’s new Face ID facial recognition system when it launches later this autumn, does away with Touch ID entirely, despite evidence that Apple tried to find a place for it in the new full-screen device. That is already sending ripples throughout the smartphone industry, with many now eager to see how readily users will embrace Touch ID, and let go of fingerprint scanning.
Of course, for consumers, this isn’t necessarily a referendum on fingerprint scanning: Another big difference between the devices is that the iPhone 8 starts at $699, while the iPhone X starts at $999.
