NEC Corporation is set to play an active role in the establishment of Internet of Things and smart city standards in Europe.
The company has announced that it’s one of the five members of a new European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) working group called the ETSI Industry Specification Group on Context Information Management (ISG CIM) will work to establish open standards for the contextual metadata of IoT systems. The specifications “will dramatically extend the interoperability of applications, helping smart cities to integrate their existing services and enable new third-party services,” according to a statement from NEC.
It’s part of a larger EU effort to establish standards for a Digital Single Market, and in developing its standard the ISG CIM will work with other groups including ETSI TC SmartM2M and ETSI PP oneM2M, and in consultation with groups like EIP-SCC and W3C. Other members of the ETSI group include Orange, Telefonica, imec, and Easy Global Market.
NEC has long shown an interest in the IoT and smart cities, with its ETSI ISG CIM membership helping the company to solidify its footing in this emerging market.
