Smartwatches continue to move into the mainstream with the launch of the Michael Kors Access smartwatch.
Unveiled at watch industry trade show Baselworld 2016, it’s a luxury accessory based on Google’s Android Wear wearables platform. It features digital interfaces exclusively designed for the Michael Kors brand, and interchangeable Michael Kors wristbands. It also features voice response and search, fitness tracking capabilities, and social media, text, and email alerts.
Commenting on the new device in a statement, Michael Kors explained that “technology is impacting life more and more,” concluding, “It should reflect your personal taste as much as anything else, but it should also give you access to all the experiences that you want.”
The accessory extends a trend pioneered by Apple with its Apple Watch, a gold-plated model of which was designed to appeal to the luxury fashion market rather than just the consumer electronics market. More recently, Apple has teamed up with luxury fashion brand Hermès to develop more fashionable wristbands to the same end. Now, Google has pushed things forward significantly together with Michael Kors, and could help to further change perceptions of the smartwatch as not merely a gadget but a fashion accessory.
