Nok Nok Labs is celebrating its role in the first implementation of a FIDO UAF 1.1 product.
The FIDO Alliance’s UAF 1.1 specification revolves around key attestation – making sure that it’s a real device that is authenticating, and not some kind of virtual spoof, with the use of cryptographic keys. And that, in turn, points to biometric authentication on Android devices, with version 8.0 and later supporting fingerprint recognition. Support for this mechanism is built into FIDO UAF 1.1, so organizations employing a certified solution can be sure that they’ll be able to easily leverage biometric authentication on Android devices.
As Nok Nok Labs Senior Director of Technology Dr. Rolf Lindemann – who was the primary author of FIDO UAF 1.1 – explains, “With the new capabilities of UAF 1.1, a developer need not wonder if a device manufacturer provides support for standards-based authentication natively on their latest device,” since any Android 8.0 or later device will be compliant.
To that end, Japan-based telecom NTT DOCOMO is using Nok Nok Labs’ Nok Nok Authentication Server to support its ‘d ACCOUNT’ application on its Xperia XZ1 (SO-01K) and Xperia XZ1 Compact (SO-02K) devices, an app designed to let end users access a range of services.
The telecom’s partnership with Nok Nok Labs extends back to 2015, when it embraced FIDO standards and became a member of the Alliance’s board of directors. In announcing this latest development, Nok Nok Labs CEO Phil Dunkelberger noted that the two companies together “launched the first mobile carrier implementation of the FIDO standard,” and said they “continue to see the sustained benefits to implementers and users that result from this visionary partnership.”
