Synaptics, a technological interface developer specializing in finger scanning, has unveiled a new fingerprint scanner that will work with Notebook PCs. The SecurePad will be integrated directly into the Notebook PC’s TouchPad, offering a biometric authentication system that meets FIDO specifications.It’s a timely introduction. Patrick Moorhead, Moor Insights & Strategy’s president and lead analyst, notes in a press release that “username and passwords are no longer a reliable method of security against today’s cyber threats,” adding, “The growing adoption of fingerprint ID technology gives OEMs the opportunity to implement modern security solutions that give consumers a convenient and easy-to-use method for protecting their data.”
And he’s right. As more and more sensitive data moves into the digital world, fraudsters follow in step, and while some reports suggest that consumers have a dangerously lackadaisical attitude about their online security, industry experts are leading the charge now, calling for more advanced security measures such as those offered by biometric security. With Apple now including its fingerprint-scanning Touch ID system in all its new mobile devices, there will likely be a growing expectation among consumers that biometric security will be in place in new devices as a standard security measure, so it’s wise of Synaptics’ partners to start getting that FIDO-certified technology into their products now, ahead of the curve.
