Oberthur Technologies is going to work with AF Payments Inc., a joint venture of First Pacific and Ayala offering contactless payment solutions in the Philippines, to enable payment cards that can be used for both transit and shopping in the capital city of Manila.
To that end, OT is providing the smart card technology. The project is aimed at enabling payments on bus lines, toll ways, and train lines, in addition to consumer goods, with the smart card acting as a kind of digital wallet.
In a statement announcing the partnership, OT Asia Financial Services Institutions Managing Director Mark Garvie said the project will “help in the development of urban transport in Manila,” while AFPI CEO Peter Maher suggested it would offer “payment means to the unbanked segment” of the population.
The companies have not yet specified a launch date for the smart card solution.
