Oberthur Technologies, Huawei, and Saudi Telecom Company have teamed up to bring eSIM technology to the MENA region.
The companies are laying claim to the region’s first eSIM trial, which will revolve around Huawei smartwatches and OT’s subscription management platform. That means STC customers will be able to register and deactivate their Huawei smartwatches remotely, without the need for any physical hardware changes; and it will allow them to make calls from their smartwatches even when no internet connection is available.
In a statement announcing the effort, STC SVP Nasser Al-Nasser said the collaboration will “pave the way for the new wave of connected M2M and consumer devices,” and that “OT’s subscription management solutions and Huawei smartwatches will accelerate the introduction of eSIM technology and open new business opportunities.”
The project arrives soon after the announcement of Gemalto’s partnership with the Bridge Alliance, an effort that will see Gemalto’s eSIM management solution adopted across the EMEA region as well. Along with OT’s recently announced Windows 10 eSIM management solution, it all points to increasing competition between the companies in the emerging eSIM market.
