Xiaomi has launched a new pair of devices in its Redmi line of smartphones, and as usual they feature biometric technology from Fingerprint Cards.
The new Redmi 5 features an FPC1035 fingerprint sensor, the same model used in the Redmi Note 5A launched in late summer, as well as the Redmi Note 4, the Redmi 4 Pro, and the Redmi Note 4X. The new Redmi 5 Plus, meanwhile, features an FPC1028 fingerprint sensor model.
Both devices’ fingerprint sensors have been deployed on the rear to make room for a large, 18:9 aspect ratio display. It’s in keeping with a trend toward full-size screens that take up almost the entire front face of a given device – a trend that appears to be having a substantial impact on the mobile biometrics industry as device makers seek alternative modalities to complement or replace fingerprint recognition.
The devices will go on sale in China starting December 12th, and start at 799 yuan (or roughly $120) for the Redmi 5 and 999 yuan (or about $150) for the Redmi 5 Plus.
