Samsung Pay Coming to Australia ‘Very Soon’: Amex Exec

April 27, 2016

Samsung Pay will soon launch in Australia. The news comes by way of American Express Australia and New Zealand’s digital commerce head Rob Bourne, who touched on Samsung Pay while speaking at an IT event in Sydney. “I can’t tell you exactly when it’s going to go live,” he said, “but it’s appearing very soon.”

Samsung Pay Coming to Australia 'Very Soon': Amex ExecThe news comes as Australia’s major banks appear to be warming up to mobile payments after a long period of resistance against Apple Pay. Google’s Android Pay announced that it had attained the support of a few major Australian banks at the end of last year (though it hasn’t yet launched in the country), and there have lately been indications that major bank support for Apple Pay is in the pipeline.

For its part, Samsung Pay has the support of not only American Express, but also MasterCard and multiple regional banks including OCBC Bank and Standard Chartered. Samsung also recently announced that its mPayment platform will soon launch in nearby Singapore, indicating that it will soon have a strong Asia-Pacific presence to complement its recent launch in China.
