A number of new studies are highlighting the utility of X2 Biosystems’ head-mounted impact sensor technology, the company says. The company’s biometric technology has helped researchers in a range of fields to study physiological and behavioural responses to physical impacts.
One study, conducted in a joint effort between Stanford University and Stockholm’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology, published in late December in the latest edition of the Annals of Biomedical Engineering, provides an analysis of X2’s six-degrees-of-freedom (6DOF) system as it was incorporated into boxing and martial arts athletes’ mouth guards. According to X2, the study found that X2’s 6DOF designs “are a key component required to enable accurate real-time predictions of concussion injury risks caused by direct and indirect head impacts.”
Meanwhile, another study, conducted by New Zealand’s Auckland University of Technology, used X2 technology to discover important insights into a possible correlation between the use of helmets in American football and the incidence of violent impacts; while a third study, undertaken by the Datalys Center for Sports Injury Research and Prevention in 2014 at the request of USA Football, used X2’s XPatch impact sensors to help illustrate the positive effects that educational programs for coaches can have on improving player behaviour and safety.
Other studies conducted by the US Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL), MEA Forensic Engineers & Scientists, Duke University, and other organizations similarly used X2 technology to great effect in studying sports- and athletics-related injuries.
Speaking in a press release, X2 CEO John Ralston said that the “number and variety of studies that X2 has seeded with “Xguard” and “Xpatch” device prototypes showcase our commitment to and leadership in developing, testing, and refining industry-leading head-mounted sensor systems for concussion management and risk assessment,” and added that the studies also provided the company with valuable feedback that is helping the company continue to refine its technology as it prepares further releases this year.
