Telefónica has become Gemalto‘s latest remote SIM management customer. The Spain-based telecom has signed on to use Gemalto’s On-Demand Connectivity cloud service via its mobile operators across 17 countries.
The collaboration means that Telefónica and its operators can update mobile subscriptions remotely, letting customers buy or change their network subscriptions without having to physically change the SIM cards of their devices, so long as their devices have eSIM technology. In a statement announcing the deal, Gemalto highlighted the remote subscription management system’s utility with devices like PCs and smartwatches, in addition to mobile devices like tablets. Gemalto Mobile Services and IoT EVP Frédéric Vasnier emphasized that seamless eSIM connectivity is “critical for widespread adoption” of devices revolving around connected services.
The arrangement appears to signal a growing commitment to emerging connectivity technologies on the part of Telefónica, which also recently partnered with OT-Morpho to leverage its GSMA M2M rev. 3.1 machine-to-machine subscription management platform. Given the size of the telecom, its leadership in this area could prompt many other service providers to follow suit.
