The Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division (ADOT MVD) has launched the Smart ID Verifier app, allowing retailers to accept mobile IDs for age verification directly on iPhones.
This new feature enhances the ability of Arizona retailers to securely verify the ages of customers purchasing age-restricted products, such as alcohol, without needing additional hardware.
The Smart ID Verifier app, developed in partnership with the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control, is available on the App Store. It enables retailers to efficiently and securely verify a customer’s age by accessing only the necessary information, such as the customer’s date of birth and ID photo. The process ensures data encryption between devices, meaning customers do not need to physically hand over their smartphones.
“ADOT MVD is proud to once again provide new ways for Arizonans to seamlessly conduct business,” said Eric Jorgensen, ADOT MVD Director. “This digital verification process is a more secure and private way to present identification.”
The app supports various forms of mobile IDs, including those stored in Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and the physical MVD-issued ID cards. Retailers can now comply with alcohol sales laws by verifying age and recording the verification accurately.
Ben Henry, Director of the Department of Liquor Licenses and Control, expressed enthusiasm for the new capability, noting that it allows establishments to securely verify patrons’ identification and ensure legal drinking age compliance directly on iPhones.
While participation in mobile ID acceptance is optional, Arizonans are advised to continue carrying their physical driver licenses or state ID cards for use with retailers that do not yet accept digital IDs. Arizona has been a pioneer in offering multiple digital ID options, starting with the Mobile ID (mID) in 2021 and expanding to include Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet in subsequent years.
