Arkansas has introduced digital driver’s licenses and state IDs in 2024, partnering with IDEMIA Public Security North America to implement the next-generation mobile identification system. The digital credentials are available as a free download from both the Apple App Store and Google Play, joining a growing movement of states adopting mobile ID solutions.
The Arkansas Mobile ID App uses IDEMIA’s patented technologies and security features to store digital IDs securely on users’ devices, rather than in a central database. The approach, which has been certified by France’s national cybersecurity agency, allows users to access their information through biometric authentication or a PIN code, providing multiple layers of security protection.
A key feature of the system allows Arkansas residents to control the amount of personal data they share in different situations. For example, when verifying age for restricted purchases, users can confirm they meet age requirements without revealing their complete birth date or other personal details. The selective disclosure capability represents a significant advancement in privacy protection compared to traditional physical IDs.
“Arkansans with an existing driver’s license or state ID can have that official state credential on their mobile phone or device through a simple process that takes less than five minutes,” said Jim Hudson, Secretary of the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration. “It is a free, secure resource that empowers Arkansans to determine the amount of information they choose to share in any transaction.”
“We are proud to lead the market with our innovative mobile ID technology, providing unparalleled convenience and the highest levels of identification privacy and security,” said Rob Gardner, CEO of IDEMIA Civil Identity North America. “Together, with Arkansas, we’re introducing a contactless, highly secure, state-approved credential that resides on the citizens’ mobile devices.”
Arkansas joins several other states, including Arizona, Delaware, Iowa, New York, and West Virginia, in implementing IDEMIA’s Mobile ID technology. The initiative represents part of Arkansas’s broader efforts to modernize state identification systems, following a national trend toward digital transformation of government services. New York’s similar program has already surpassed 200,000 users, demonstrating growing public acceptance of digital identification solutions.
